August 2025 Director’s Message

As we move into the heart of summer at Channel Islands Harbor, I’d like to begin by extending my sincere thanks to our dedicated public safety partners who helped monitor the recent tsunami event that originated from the earthquake in Russia. Thankfully, our harbor has experienced no known impacts to vessels or marina infrastructure. A special thank you goes out to our Ventura County Harbor Patrol and seasonal lifeguard teams for their vigilance and professionalism in keeping the harbor and our beaches safe during and after the event.

We also want to thank everyone who joined us for the annual Fireworks by the Sea celebration on the 4th of July. The turnout was incredible, with thousands of visitors enjoying a day full of fun and showing strong support for the harbor and our local businesses. We appreciate your patience as the fireworks show experienced a brief delay due to a technical issue with our vendor. Despite the delay, the evening still ended with a spectacular display over the water.

This summer has been full of memorable community events that highlight all the harbor has to offer. The Channel Islands Maritime Museum recently hosted its Tales and Tacos celebration, a fun community event commemorating the Harbor’s 60th anniversary with delicious food, live storytelling, and our rich maritime history. In addition, the Channel Islands Fine Arts Festival drew art lovers from across the region to enjoy works by talented local and national artists.

We take great pride in hosting events like these that draw visitors to the harbor, support our small businesses, and strengthen our sense of community.

Lastly, we’re thrilled that our Concerts by the Sea summer series has been such a hit so far! These free Saturday concerts at Harbor View Park continue throughout August, offering great music, scenic views, and the perfect way to spend a summer evening at the harbor.

Development Update

Looking ahead, we want to inform the community that a public hearing on the proposed Karls Village project will take place on Thursday, August 14, 2025, at the California Coastal Commission’s next meeting in Calabasas.

This moment represents a full-circle milestone – three years ago, the Ventura County Harbor Department received proposals to revitalize Fisherman’s Wharf, with Karls being one of the standout concepts. Since then, there have been dozens of public outreach meetings and hundreds of hours of work invested to get us to this point by the developer’s team, our staff, and engaged community members. Thank you to everyone who has taken an interest in this project so far.

If the Coastal Commission approves the project, the developer will receive the land use entitlements necessary to move forward. This approval would allow the Karls team to begin seeking building permits from the City of Oxnard and take the next steps in bringing this long-discussed, exciting project to life.

Thank you for being a part of our vibrant harbor community. See you on the water or at the next concert!

Michael Tripp, Director
Ventura County Harbor Department
