Enroll in Boating Center Activities Today!

The Channel Islands Boating Center (CIBC) is the perfect place in the Channel Islands Harbor to brush up on your boating skills in the classroom and on the water.  The boating center offers a variety of options, starting in February 2020, to meet your interests.

The CIBC, located at 3880 Bluefin Circle in the Harbor, provides educational opportunities for youth and adults of Ventura County, the CSU Channel Islands community and others from around the state.

On the Water

Participants are welcome to enroll in sailing instruction, kayaking instruction, sunset kayaking, and stand up paddle instruction. These on-the-water experiences will put participants in touch with Channel Islands Harbor waters.

Classroom Opportunities

Boating Skills and Seamanship

The U. S. Coast Guard Auxiliary’s Boating Skills and Seamanship (BS&S) course is a comprehensive course designed for both the experienced and the novice boater.  This course consists of 8 core required two-hour lessons plus five elective lessons, providing up-to-date knowledge for handling boats in all conditions.

Weekend Navigator

The U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary’s Weekend Navigation Course is a comprehensive course designed for both experienced and novice powerboat and sailboat operators.  The course is divided into two major parts designed to educate the boating enthusiast in skills required for a safe voyage on a variety of waters and boating conditions.  This course can be taught as a whole or as separate modules.

Boating Center Activities in January

While there are a variety of options to engage with the CIBC, there were plenty of activities taking place in January 2020. Here is a list of groups the CIBC worked with last month:

  • CSUCI School of Education hosted a two day retreat in the upstairs classroom on January 9 and 10, 2020.
  • CSUCI Career Development Services hosted a one day retreat at the CIBC on Tuesday, January 14, 2020.
  • The NOAA Organization and Marine Protected Agencies held a collaborative meeting at the CIBC utilizing the upstairs classrooms and on the dock to train partners on a hand held remote operated vehicle (ROV). The meeting detailed statewide updates regarding collecting important marine life data with the ROV. The meeting was held on Wednesday, January 15, 2020.
  • CSUCI Nursing Faculty Retreat was held at the boating center to kick off the new academic semester on January 23, 2020.
  • CSUCI Counseling and Psychological Services hosted their Spring Retreat in the classroom space on January 24, 2020.
  • Officials from the County of Ventura hosted a meeting in the classroom space on January 30, 2020.
