November 2025 Director’s Message
As we move into November, I want to take a moment to reflect on recent events and express my gratitude for the great people and partnerships that continue to make the Channel Islands Harbor a strong and connected community.
First and foremost, I want to extend my deepest thanks to the first responders (Ventura County Sheriff’s Department, Ventura County Fire Department, Oxnard Fire Department, Ventura Harbor Patrol) and TowBoat US who acted swiftly during the Oct. 18th vessel fire at the Channel Islands Harbor fuel dock. Their quick and coordinated actions prevented what could have been a much more serious incident.
A special commendation goes to Ventura County Harbor Patrol Officer Matt Allport, whose decisive actions were instrumental in keeping the situation from escalating. Once boaters were moved away from the incident area, Officer Allport bravely maneuvered a patrol boat to pull a 30-foot burning vessel away from the fuel dock, ensuring the safety of fuel dock facilities and personnel.
This incident is a powerful reminder of how hard our Harbor Patrol trains and prepares for moments like these. Their dedication, professionalism, and composure under pressure exemplify the best of public service.
I also want to thank the crew members from our dredging operator Manson Construction, who quickly responded with their work vessel to help extinguish the flames once the flaming vessel was in open water. Their assistance was critical, especially as the Harbor Patrol’s primary fire boat was temporarily out of service for routine maintenance. The collaboration between public safety personnel and our maritime partners demonstrates the strong sense of teamwork that defines our harbor community.
On a brighter note, October was filled with success stories that showcased the harbor’s vibrant spirit. The 4th Annual Parade of Frights on Oct. 25th drew a large number of visitors for an afternoon and evening of creativity, costumes, and community fun. For the first time, we also introduced the Pumpkin Paddle, which brought together paddlers of all ages in festive costumes for a one-of-a-kind Halloween celebration on the water. The excitement and participation far exceeded the Harbor Department’s expectations – setting the stage for this to become a new harbor tradition.
Finally, I was proud to represent the Ventura County Harbor Department as a member of the California Marine Affairs and Navigation Conference (CMANC) in Washington, D.C. from Oct. 20-22. The meetings with federal officials and congressional representatives were productive and focused on critical issues like dredging, harbor infrastructure, and long-term funding needs. Maintaining these relationships is essential to ensuring the Channel Islands Harbor remains safe, navigable, and economically strong.
As we head into the holiday season, I’m grateful for our staff, partners, and community members who make the Channel Islands Harbor a place where dedication, collaboration, and community thrive.
