September 2022 Director’s Message

Channel Islands Harbor is full of rich traditions that have helped us form a unique identity on the Central Coast, Southern California, and in Ventura County. Our traditions create a sense of comfort and belonging and help make lasting memories for the community and visitors.

I’m pleased to announce the Ventura County Harbor Department is moving forward and creating what I hope to be a new tradition at the Channel Islands Harbor – an annual boat parade centered around Halloween, the Parade of Frights. My staff has conducted research on other destinations on the West Coast and we believe this will be the only Halloween-themed boat parade of its kind!

The Parade of Frights, scheduled to start at 6 p.m. on Saturday, October 29, 2022, will be a non-competitive boat parade that will allow our boating community to showcase their decorated vessels and favorite Halloween costumes. Our hope is that this parade will provide boaters with an opportunity to come together and help create lasting memories for attendees watching landside.

Prior to the boat parade, a variety of organizations and businesses will be offering Halloween-related events and activities to help build upon the overall experience. The Channel Islands Farmers’ Market will be offering an expanded market with bounce houses, face-painting, live music, and a costume contest. The market vendors will be in costume and handing out candy to children. The Channel Islands Maritime Museum will be offering a scavenger hunt for families. We are working with additional businesses to create a spooky, yet fun environment for families.

Of course, there will be many other places that offer Halloween activities this day, but what they don’t have is our unique marine environment.

If you are a boat owner, please join us and register your vessel for the Parade of Frights. If you don’t own a boat, we hope you bring family and friends and enjoy this new tradition!

Michael Tripp, Director
Ventura County Harbor Department
