April 2026 Director’s Message
Spring has arrived at Channel Islands Harbor, bringing with it renewed energy, important progress, and the start of another exciting season along our waterfront.
Parking Lot Improvement Project Underway
I’m pleased to share that the long-anticipated parking lot improvements along Harbor Boulevard on the west side of the Harbor are now underway. Phase I of this project includes replacing parking lots from the Channel Islands Yacht Club to Barracuda Way.
Currently, County-maintained sidewalks along the project area’s green spaces have been demolished and are being replaced. These upgrades will not only enhance the overall appearance of our public spaces, but more importantly, they will improve accessibility by meeting modern ADA standards, ensuring that everyone can safely and comfortably enjoy the Harbor.
Following the completion of the sidewalks, work will continue with the replacement of adjacent parking lots. The project should be completed by May 2026. Phase II of this project will extend improvements from Barracuda Way to the Marine Emporium Landing parking lot.
These improvements are part of a broader, long-term strategy to address the Harbor’s aging infrastructure and invest in its future. I want to emphasize that these parking areas will remain free for the public once completed, continuing our commitment to maintaining accessible and welcoming coastal spaces for all.
In the meantime, we’ve already made targeted improvements, including maintenance work at the Marine Emporium Landing parking lot, one of the busiest in the Harbor, to enhance safety and usability for visitors and tenants alike. I would like to thank the Harbor Department’s maintenance staff for their work in this parking lot.
Harbor Events in 2026 Kick Off in April
As we make progress on these important projects, we also look forward to the return of Harbor events that bring our community together. Our event season kicks off this month with Celebration of the Whales, a cherished tradition that highlights the beauty and significance of our coastal environment. In May, we’ll continue with the Channel Islands Harbor Safe Boating Expo, offering valuable education and hands-on experiences to help ensure a safe and enjoyable season on the water.
Looking forward to 2026, there are a variety of activities planned so far at the Harbor that I hope you and your loved ones will enjoy.
