November 2020 Director’s Message

A group of kayaks paddles past boats moored in Channel Islands Harbor

As I write this message, the first seasonal rain is coming around the corner, the week after we changed our clocks so that it gets dark around 5 p.m.  Feels…

Moment No. 1: Our top moment of the year was a reel that captures the calm of a Channel Islands Harbor evening. Filmed at dusk, the scene unfolds with a crescent moon overhead, Anacapa Island silhouetted in the distance, and a softly lit electric boat gliding down the channel. Paired with the timeless song “Stand by Me,” the moment feels cinematic, nostalgic, and deeply calming! This post wasn’t flashy. It was peaceful, beautiful, and just the type of vibe residents and visitors love.

Thank you for stopping, watching, and engaging: you made this simple, soulful harbor moment our #1 of the year. ❤️

Moment No. 2: Our second most-popular post of the year came from January 2025 and we think we know exactly why it landed as a top moment.

Captured by @shanemcgowan in the early morning hours above Silver Strand Beach, this epic photo shows a Starlink satellite deployment streaking across the sky. While rocket launches seemed to become more frequent in 2025, this moment still stopped people in their tracks. The timing, the light, and sheer scale of it all came together to create a truly unforgettable image. Proof that even something we see more often can still inspire awe when captured just right.

Moment No. 3: August 2025 was a major turning point for the redevelopment of Fisherman’s Wharf. That’s because on Aug. 14, 2025 the California Coastal Commission approved a plan to redevelop this property into a “Karls Village” at the popular Harbor location. The approval was seen as the final step to have the project move forward. The rendering pictured here has everyone excited for what’s to come!

Applicant Robert Dahl, a German strawberry farmer and developer, plans to turn this property into a vibrant, family-friendly destination for residents and visitors.  Next steps for the project include securing building permits through the City of Oxnard and beginning pre-construction work. The Harbor Department and Karls will continue engaging with the community as the project moves forward. Karls plans to begin construction in 2026 and is targeting a grand opening in Spring 2028!

Moment No. 4: Thousands of velella velellas, also known as “By-the-Wind Sailors, washed ashore around the Harbor and on Kiddie, Silver Strand, and Hollywood beaches in April 2025. This post piqued the interest of people in beach towns across California, as they observed a similar phenomenon in their community, and wanted to know more about these sea creatures.

Here is more information about the “By-the-Wind Sailors…”

According to the National Park Service, Velella are not true jellyfish, but are related to jellyfish, as well as to sea anemones, corals, and hydroids. The Velella is a flat, oval-shaped creature, bluish to purple in color and three to four inches long. The body is relatively firm and has a flexible two-inch-high triangular “sail” attached to it. The Velella’s sail is S-shaped at its base and is attached to the body diagonally. Dangling from its body are numerous blue tentacles which contain stinging cells (cnidocysts, also called nematocysts) to help capture the Velella’s food. Velella’s stinging cells are rarely harmful to humans, as opposed to those of the Portuguese man o’ war.

Velella is an offshore animal which lives on the surface of the water. It feeds on planktonic crustaceans, primarily copepods. Known predators are limited but include nudibranchs (sea slugs) in the genus Glaucus and purple snails in the genus Janthina.

The name “by-the-wind-sailor” is really a misnomer for this little animal. Velella don’t actively navigate using their sail, although they are at the mercy of the winds as to where they go. When the sail catches the wind, the Velella will be blown downwind at an angle to the wind. This sets Velella apart from many other jellyfish, which drift with the ocean currents. #channelislandsharbor #visitoxnard #ciharbor #venturacounty #oxnard

Moment No. 5: “The joy of being on the Ventura County Coast,” a September 2025 post, captures sea lions enjoying the waves at Silver Strand Beach. This beach is located just outside the Harbor entrance and is maintained by the Ventura County Harbor Department. This beach, which features great waves, wildlife, and is generally uncrowded, is loved by locals, Ventura County residents, and visitors from all over Southern California! ❤️ #channelislandsharbor #visitoxnard #vccvibes #venturacounty #oxnard
