The Story of Karls at Channel Islands Harbor
For generations, Fisherman’s Wharf has been a gathering place at Channel Islands Harbor, reflecting the area’s maritime heritage and connection to the waterfront. Today, the historic site is preparing for a new chapter with the arrival of Karls Village, an innovative family destination that will bring a new waterfront experience to Oxnard and Ventura County while celebrating the region’s unique character.
Karls Village is a German-based destination concept that blends agriculture, entertainment, dining, shopping, and family-friendly attractions. Founded in Germany, Karls has become known for creating immersive experiences that connect visitors with farming traditions through attractions, markets, seasonal events, and hands-on activities.
The Channel Islands Harbor location in Oxnard will mark Karls’ first destination in the United States. The project will bring the company’s signature experience to the waterfront, combining the area’s agricultural heritage with the coastal lifestyle that makes the harbor unique.
The vision for Karls Village at Fisherman’s Wharf began with a commitment to community engagement. The Ventura County Harbor Department, along with the Karls development team, worked with residents, harbor visitors, businesses, and community stakeholders through workshops and outreach efforts to gather input, share information, and help shape the future of the site.
Over several years, community members provided feedback and offered ideas that helped guide the project’s design and the experiences planned for the destination. While many participated in the early planning conversations, the future of Fisherman’s Wharf is a community milestone, and the revitalized destination will welcome residents and visitors from across the region.
Following an extensive planning and review process, the project received approval from the California Coastal Commission in 2025. The City of Oxnard later approved plans to move forward with redevelopment of the Fisherman’s Wharf site.
When complete, Karls will transform the longtime waterfront destination into a vibrant attraction featuring restaurants, shops, entertainment, public spaces, and unique experiences for visitors of all ages. The project is expected to open in Spring 2028.
